If you work at a hospital ER or know someone that does, they will let you know that the Holiday Season especially on New Years Eve, sees some of the busiest times. New years eve and the celebratory mood that comes with it seems to be a magnet for health problems and disasters keeping doctors and healthcare professionals busy tending to victims of the occasion. Year after year, revelers turn up as patients.

With new years eve just around the corner, here are some of the most common issues that surface during the festivities and simple tips to avoid them. Plain and simple!

Road Accidents

Although they can occur at any place and anytime, new years eve is especially notorious when it comes to road accidents involving pedestrians and those in vehicles. With blood alcohol levels overall at a high, adrenalin fueled drivers and mistakes waiting to happen, you can never be too cautious while moving around during the day or night. If you’re drinking it’s needless to say you should appoint a designated driver that isn’t going to be drinking that night and ensure you’re not the cause of an accident. However, if you’re not, avoid places where the chances of reckless driving are high and exercise extreme caution wherever you’re traveling.

Drinking & Drugs

The root causes of a lot that can go wrong on new years eve is binge drinking or irresponsible drinking to get drunk. Mixing drinks and losing sight of limits always ends up with being drunk and ending up at the ER if you’re not careful. New years eve seems to tempt a lot of people into doing things they normally wouldn’t do including experimenting with drugs and narcotics. Remember…nothing good can come out of it!

Bloody Noses & Broken Ribs

Yes, new years eve can literally bring out the animal in many people and tempers are often at a high too resulting in fights, brawls and injuries that can range from small to severe. If you find yourself in or close to a situation, walk away and AVOID confrontation.

Burns & Lacerations

Fireworks, pyrotechnics, electrical, decorative lighting and other fun stuff can potentially turn disastrous. While they are always risky, the inclination to try something silly on new years eve makes them a little more riskier. Be conscious of safety while dealing with anything that can cause burns and injuries.

Unsafe Sex

Once again, the ability of new years eve to tempt otherwise sane, thinking people into doing something silly can result in bad decisions. Hooking up with unknown people, engaging in unprotected sex or simply taking things a bit too far can result in contracting diseases, unplanned pregnancies or just extremely embarrassing situations. If you find yourself gravitating towards a situation with one of these outcomes…think twice. It’s not the end of the world….it’s just the end of one year and the beginning of another so avoid making regrettable decisions.

Stress

Yes, stress and good times go hand in hand. Just like the yuletide season, new years eve is a time when stress can really emerge resulting in potentially terrible outcomes. From strokes, heart attacks, nervous breakdowns to all kinds of health risks…stress is best avoided during this time of the year. If you feel it coming on, take a step back, change your plans and have a relaxed new years eve by doing something that will keep you free from it all.

Suspicious People

Unfortunately among all the fun and festivities, there are always those out there who are out to harm or have less than straight intentions. Drugging drinks, date rapes, attempts at thefts, assault and people taking advantage of you is a real and ever-present risk. Keep an eye out for anyone or anything that may seem out of place and stay away from places or people where the risk of ending up in a terrible situation is on the higher side.

With a bit of caution and understanding of what the dangers of this special day are, new years eve can be a terrific and memorable time in every year. So be safe, have a great time and wish you a very very happy new year!
